The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently announced that more than 100,000 people died of drug overdoses during the 12-month period ending April 2021. Health officials described the dramatic increase in overdose deaths as an example of the devastating effects of COVID-19 as it spreads far beyond the disease itself.
